Share

COLUMBUS – The Capital men’s basketball team defeated Ohio Northern 66-61 in the Ohio Athletic Conference semifinals Tuesday night at the Capital Center to move on to the OAC Championship game against Wilmington.

The Crusaders (17-9) will host fifth-seeded Wilmington, which knocked off John Carroll by a 79-74 count, at the Capital Center this Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

The No. 2 seed Crusaders were able to hold off the Polar Bears (14-14) in the final minute of the contest as Capital’s Kelly Winter (Dublin, Ohio) scored four free throws in the final 30 seconds to give his team an OAC championship game berth.

Junior Spencer Niekamp (St. Henry, Ohio) led all Capital scorers with 22 points and recorded 10 rebounds, and Winter tallied 19 points while grabbing five rebounds.

Capital entered Thursday night’s game coming off of winning the program’s 11th OAC regular season title after defeating Muskingum 60-65 on Feb. 18 at the Capital Center. Since the team earned a bye to the semifinals, it came into the contest against Ohio Northern, which as the sixth seed played its third game in four days, with four days of rest.

Capital started the game aggressively in the opening five minutes, but weren’t able to get the ball through the hoop, shooing 1-8 in the opening five minutes of the game.

The defense for both teams dominated in the early minutes of the opening period, as the score was only 4-2 in favor of Capital at the 14-minute mark.

Neither team was able to take complete control of the contest in the first half, as the greatest margin between the two teams was four points. Capital trailed Ohio Northern 25-24 at the end of the opening period.

Capital stormed out in the second half to take their first lead in nearly 12 minutes as Winter completed a three-point play, knocking down a free throw after a successful layup to give his team a 27-25 lead.

Capital wasn’t able to possess the lead for long as Ohio Northern’s Tony Meyer scored on a very deep three-point shot to give his team a 34-32 lead at the 15:32 mark of the second half.

After losing the lead, Capital went on a 13-2 run that was capped by Niekamp’s two successful free throws to give the Crusaders a 45-36 lead at the 10:35 mark.

The Polar Bears refused to let the game slip away as Scott Schnelle’s two free throws brought his team within 54-53 at the 5:15 mark.

The matchup was decided by a thrilling final minute. Ohio Northern’s Branden Rushton scored a fade-away 3-pointer to reduce the margin to only one as his team trailed Capital 62-61 at the 49-second mark.

Winter was able to follow Rushton’s basket with two successful free throws. With six seconds left in the contest, Winter was able to steal the ball from Rushton and score on two more free throws to seal the victory for the Crusaders.

Capital last reached the OAC Tournament final in 2009, when it was defeated 90-87 at John Carroll. The Crusaders last won the tournament title in 2007.

ODU Falls 80-61 on Pink Wave Day

Share

COLUMBUS, Ohio – A spirited second half effort wasn’t enough for Ohio Dominican’s men’s basketball team as the Panthers succumbed to visiting Findlay 80-61 in GLIAC South Division play Saturday.

Trailing by 25 at halftime, ODU cut its deficit to 11 on a pair of occasions, including 68-57 with just under six minutes to play, but did not make a field goal after that point.

Four Panthers scored in double figures, led by 14 points from senior forward Jake Mochoskay (Mansfield, Ohio) and six rebounds. Senior forward Aaron Gibbs (Oberlin, Ohio) chipped in with 12 points and a game-best nine rebounds and is now just six points from reaching 1,000 for his career. Senior center Zak Kapron (Malvern, Ohio) and senior guard Darrien Douglas (Willard, Ohio) both chimed in with 11 to also pace the Panthers.

ODU trailed 12-8 early after a Mochoskay layin, but the Oilers ripped off 11 straight points as part of a 22-5 spurt to grab a 34-13 lead with 7:10 to play in the first half. The lead stretched to 25 at intermission as Findlay hit 17-of-32 shots from the field (53.1 percent) while limiting the Panthers to 34.6 percent shooting (9-of-26) and forcing 10 ODU turnovers.

The Panthers started the second half with energy, though, as a 14-5 run trimmed the deficit to 54-38 at the 15:35 mark. Buckets by Gibbs at the 7:13 and 5:54 marks brought the Panthers to within 11, but Ohio Dominican missed its final five shots from the field and managed just four free throws to close out the scoring.

With the setback, ODU dropped to 3-20 (0-17 GLIAC), while the Oilers moved to 17-6 (11-5 GLIAC). The Panthers hit the road Thursday for an 8 p.m. tip-off against Hillsdale.

Late First Half Rally Sends Oilers Past Lady Panthers

Share

COLUMBUS, Ohio – A late first half spark by Findlay that continued into the second helped lift the Oilers past Ohio Dominican’s women’s basketball team, 85-64, on Saturday afternoon’s Pink Wave Day at Alumni Hall.

After back-to-back three pointers by freshman Kacee Hockenberry (Haviland, OH) gave the Panthers their largest lead of the day at 22-14 with 5:34 to go in the first, Findlay got its offense on track, hitting 10-of-16 shots to close the half as part of a 21-4 rally for the 35-26 halftime advantage.

The Oilers (13-10, 7-9 GLIAC) carried the momentum swing over into the second, shooting 56.7 percent (17-of-30) en route to a 47.5 percent (29-of-61) effort on the afternoon. The Panthers were able to close within 11 twice in the final eight minutes, but key baskets and notable free throw shooting helped keep ODU at bay. Findlay finished the game 22-of-24 (91.7 percent) at the charity stripe, including 13-of-14 in the second.

Senior Meredith Fox (Springboro, OH) was the top scorer for ODU (6-17, 2-15 GLIAC) with 14, while Hockenberry reached double figures for the fourth time in six contests with 11. Senior Abby Glover (Centerville, OH) collected a game-high 11 rebounds to go along with six points, three assists, two steals and one block. The Panthers won the rebounding battle for the second straight game, outrebounding the Oilers 41-31, including 19 on the offensive glass.

Lacey Kessler led a 48-point Findlay bench effort with a game-high 23, going 6-of-9 from the floor and 11-of-11 at the stripe. Carlay Stahl also added 14 off the bench, while starter Kayla Brown finished with 16.

The women head to Hillsdale (Mich.) next Thursday, Feb. 16 for a 5:30 p.m. start in its lone game of the week and final road contest of the year.

Capital Falls, Remains Alone in First Place

The Capital University men’s basketball team saw its four-game winning streak snapped Saturday, suffering a 75-64 setback at Baldwin-Wallace in an Ohio Athletic Conference contest in Berea, Ohio.

Despite the loss, the Crusaders (15-8 overall, 12-4 OAC) remain in first place in the conference standings, one game ahead of Marietta and John Carroll with two games to play. Capital visits Marietta on Wednesday and can clinch at least a share of the OAC regular season title with a win.

Junior Spencer Niekamp (St. Henry, Ohio) totaled 19 points and shot 11-of-13 from the free throw line to pace the Crusaders, who shot 52.9 percent in the second half after a 29-percent mark in the first.

The Yellow Jackets (15-8, 10-6), who won for the fourth straight time, shot a blazing 73.7 percent in the second half, and led for the final 30 minutes of play and by no less than seven over the final 15:08.

Senior Kelly Winter (Dublin, Ohio) added 15 points for Capital, while junior Mitch Westerheide (Fort Loramie, Ohio) contributed with nine.

Neither team found much of an offensive rhythm in the first half. Baldwin-Wallace led 26-17 at the 5:16 mark, but the Crusaders closed the deficit to five by halftime.

Capital closed to 30-29 just under a minute into the second thanks to consecutive baskets by junior Michael Sommer (Celina, Ohio) and Westerheide. The Yellow Jackets responded with a 13-2 run to take a 43-31 advantage with 14:19 to play.

Niekamp brought the Crusaders to within eight at the 12:27 mark with free throws on two straight possessions, but Capital never seriously threatened to take control of the contest.

The Crusaders outscored the Yellow Jackets 12-5 on second-chance points, while Baldwin-Wallace held a 32-20 advantage on points in the paint.

Akron Sweeps MAC West with 75-51 Win Over NIU

Share

AKRON, Ohio – Three players scored in double figures to help the Akron Zips to its third sweep of the Mid-American Conference West Division in program history thanks to a 75-51 victory over Northern Illinois Saturday night at Rhodes Arena.

The sweep of the MAC West (6-0) is the second under eighth-year head coach Keith Dambrot and the first since 2005-06. Akron (18-7, 10-1 MAC) went 8-0 in cross-divisional play in 2005-06 and 1998-99. Including the 2011 MAC Tournament, Akron has won 11-straight against the West Division, nine-straight in the regular season.

Akron’s 10-1 start to MAC play is the best in program history and in the first 10-1 start in league play for any team since 2005-06 season (Kent State).

Dambrot reached two milestones with the win, becoming the seventh coach to win 200 overall games as a MAC coach and the eighth coach to win 100 league games.

Nikola Cvetinovic led all players with 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field and 4-of-5 from the charity stripe. Nick Harney (12) and Demetrius Treadwell (11) also reached double figures. Treadwell added a game-high eight boards, including seven in the second half.

Keith Gray and Abdel Nader led NIU (3-20, 2-9 MAC) with 13 points each.

The Akron bench began to flex its muscle in the second half, stringing together a 15-5 run to give the Zips a 54-34 advantage by the 9:21 mark. Chauncey Gilliam extended the run with five points of his own, forcing an NIU timeout with 7:55 to go and Akron leading 59-34.

Despite not hitting their first field goal of the second half until the 15:41 mark, the Zips were able to grab a 39-27 lead thanks to a 5-of-6 performance at the charity stripe.

Akron opened up an early 10-4 lead (15:21) behind a strong defensive effort by Zeke Marshall, who blocked three shots in the first five minutes of the game. NIU answered with a 9-0 run to grab its first lead of the game (13-10) with 10:37 to go in the half. Treadwell ended that run with a layup at the 10:15 mark.

After both teams traded several small leads, the Zips opened up a 31-22 advantage with 1:37 on the first half clock courtesy of a 12-2 run. The Huskies would score the final bucket of the half with Akron leading 31-24.

Treadwell led the Zips with seven points in the first half as Akron shot 52.4 percent from the floor (11-of-21), but did not connect on a 3-pointer (0-of-3). NIU held a 20-9 rebounding advantage, but turned the ball over 13 times and committed 11 fouls. UA finished with seven turnovers.

First Half Run Lifts Chargers Past Panthers, 74-53

Share

COLUMBUS, Ohio – A 30-8 Hillsdale run wiped out Ohio Dominican’s first half lead as the men’s basketball team fell 74-53 to the No. 23 Chargers Thursday night in a GLIAC South Division game at Alumni Hall.

The Chargers shot a crisp 50.9 percent from the field for the game (28-of-55), with 20 assists on those 28 baskets. Hillsdale hit 14-of-24 from the field (58.3 percent) in the first half and drilled 9-of-17 three-pointers overall (52.9 percent).

Senior forward Jake Mochoskay (Mansfield, Ohio) was the lone Panther in double figures with 15 points to go along with a team-high five rebounds. Senior forward Aaron Gibbs (Oberlin, Ohio) had eight points as well.

ODU opened the game with a 9-4 spurt, fueled by four points from junior guard Morgan Jones (Oberlin, Ohio) and a triple by senior guard Darrien Douglas (Willard, Ohio). Hillsdale took control from that point, though, limiting the Panthers to just eight points in an 11:05 stretch and building a 34-17 lead with 5:01 to play. ODU was able to trim the deficit at the break as senior guard Kip Kelley (Raleigh, N.C.) came up with a steal and Gibbs finished with a lay-in at the buzzer.

The Panthers (3-19, 0-16 GLIAC) cut the deficit to single digits on a pair of occasions early in the second half, but the Chargers (19-3, 13-2 GLIAC) pulled away in the second half and would lead by as many as 23 points in the frame.

ODU shot 35.2 percent for the game (19-of-57) against the GLIAC’s top defense and was out-rebounded 39-26

Akron Zipsl Cruise to 77-47 Win Over Eastern Michigan

Share

AKRON, Ohio – Chauncey Gilliam scored 13 points and Nikola Cvetinovic had 12 points and seven rebounds to guide Akron to an easy 77-47 win over Eastern Michigan in Mid-American Conference action on Saturday night at Rhodes Arena.

That duo combined to make 10-of-19 shots from the field (Gilliam 5-of-9) as two of four Akron (16-7, 8-1 MAC) players to score in double-figures.

Zeke Marshall and Brett McClanahan scored 11 points apiece for the Zips. Marshall continued his assault on the MAC record book, moving into sixth place on the career blocked shots list with his 224th swat (four tonight).

The victory, UA’s fifth straight and 13th in the last 15 games, gave eighth-year Akron head coach Keith Dambrot his 178 win at UA and tied him with former coach Tony Laterza (1960-68) for second place on the school’s all-time wins list.

Matt Balkema led Eastern Michigan (10-13, 5-4 MAC) with 15 points and six rebounds.

The game got off to a slow start with both teams trying to feel each other out.  However, it was Akron that grabbed a 10-point lead (17-7) with 11:07 to go in the first half.  From there, the Zips would go on a 14-2 run over the next 3:46 to open up a 31-9 advantage by the 7:21 mark.

Akron held Eastern Michigan to just seven points the rest of the half and would take a 39-16 lead into the locker room.

Cvetinovic lead all scorers in the half with eight points and four rebounds.  Gilliam and Marshall each had seven points while Walsh led all players with six boards.

The Zips shot 44.8 percent in the half (13-of-29) while holding a 23-15 advantage on the boards.  Akron’s defense held EMU to just 20.0 percent shooting from the floor (4-of-20) and forced 15 turnovers.

Akron pushed its lead to as many as 26 points (50-24) over the first 8:23 and the Zips maintained a 50-29 lead by the under-12 media timeout (11:37).

EMU began to chip away at the Akron advantage, cutting the lead to 15 points (52-37) with 8:53 left in the game.  The 15-point deficit was the smallest for the Eagles since the 9:03 mark of the first half (24-9).  Akron would quickly push its lead back to 20-points and would eventually lead by as many as 31 (73-42).

Akron hits the road for one game when it travels to Kalamazoo, Mich., to face Western Michigan on Wednesday, Feb. 8. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. ET and the game will air live on SportsTime Ohio.

Zips Notebook: Eastern Michigan’s 16 points in the first half were a season low for an Akron opponent in the opening 20 minutes … the previous low was 19 points by Florida A&M (Dec. 17) … Zeke Marshall passed Ohio’s Patrick Flomo (222, 1998-2002) … sophomore walk-on Luke Avsec made his Zips debut in the second half, he played two minutes and had one rebound … dating to last season, UA has won nine-straight games during the month of February and the program is 16-3 during that month since the 2009-10 campaign.

ODU Men Drop 75-54 Decision to Lake Erie

Share

PAINESVILLE, Ohio – Senior center Zak Kapron (Malvern, Ohio) had a double-double, but it wasn’t enough as Ohio Dominican’s men’s basketball team fell 75-54 to Lake Erie Saturday in a GLIAC South Division matchup at the Osborne Center.

Kapron finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Panthers, while senior forward Aaron Gibbs (Oberlin, Ohio) also tallied 11 points, three blocks and three steals. Junior guard Morgan Jones (Oberlin, Ohio) finished with five assists and three steals for ODU as well.

Ohio Dominican grabbed an early lead as Kapron scored seven of ODU’s first 10 points and senior guard Darrien Douglas (Willard, Ohio) drilled a triple from the right wing to put the Panthers in front 10-7 at the 13:01 mark. The Panthers went cold after that, though, as ODU did not score again until there was 5:17 to go in the frame, as Lake Erie used a 12-0 run to grab a 19-10 advantage. Freshman center Bobby Stauffer (Lexington, Ky.) ended the run with a putback on an offensive rebound, but the Storm would keep the lead in double figures for the rest of the frame and were on top 32-20 at the break.

In the second half, Lake Erie extended its lead to as many as 25 points as the Panthers – who shot 31.3 percent for the game, compared to 49.1 percent for the Storm – could not find enough offense to overcome the deficit.

Ohio Dominican returns to action at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in a GLIAC South Division matchup with Hillsdale in Alumni Hall.

Storm Upstage Lady Panthers 60-59 with Furious Second Half Rally

Share

PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The second half proved treacherous yet again for Ohio Dominican’s women’s basketball team as Lake Erie rallied from a 19-point hole to edge the visiting Panthers 60-59 Saturday afternoon at the Jerome T. Osborne Center.

Leading 48-29 just over five minutes into the second, the Panthers went cold from the floor with only one field goal over the next 10:40 allowing the Storm to capitalize with a 25-4 rally and reclaim their first lead since 2-0 at 54-52 with 4:56 left to play.

Following a lay-in by sophomore Katelyn Stuckey (Millersburg, OH), LEC took its largest lead of the day 59-54 with 2:08 remaining. Freshman Kacee Hockenberry (Haviland, OH) answered with her third triple to cut the deficit to two, but after a Storm free throw with 13 seconds left, ODU could only muster a lay-up in the closing second for the final result.

After shooting 12-of-24 in the opening half, including 7-of-12 (58.3 percent) from long range, the Panthers hit only 8-of-30 (26.7 percent) in the second, while LEC improved upon its poor start with 47.8 percent (11-of-23) after the break. Despite shooting only 30.0 percent (15-of-50) for the game, the Storm sank a remarkable 25-of-30 (83.3 percent) at the charity stripe, compared to just 9-of-12 for the Panthers.

For the sixth straight contest, ODU put forth another stout effort in the first half, however it was the Panthers’ defense this time that provided the spark, holding the Storm to just 21 points on 4-of-27 (14.8 percent) shooting, including a 1-of-17 start. The 21 points was the fewest allowed by ODU this season, while the 16-point halftime lead was a new season high.

Despite a relatively slow opening by both teams, ODU was able to take advantage of its defensive prowess, growing an early 8-2 lead to 14-4 and eventually 22-11 at the 6:11 mark as Stuckey finished an old-fashioned three-point play. The offense, sparked by Hockenberry with back-to-back triples began to gather steam, hitting three-pointers on four of its ensuing six trips to increase the advantage to 34-15 with 2:52 left.

Stuckey paced the Panthers with 13 points, while senior Abby Glover (Centerville, OH) finished with 10 points and team-high nine rebounds. Hockenberry and senior Katy Rasor (Grove City, OH) tallied nine apiece, each connecting on a trio of three-pointers.

Jen Caiola and Alyssa Wagers each collected 16 points for LEC with Caiola scoring all 16 in the second, including 4-of-8 from behind the arc. Stephanie Rogers notched the rare triple-double with 13 points, and game-highs of 10 boards and 10 blocks.

ODU is back in Alumni Hall next week for a pair of South Division contests, beginning Thursday, Feb. 9 with a 5:30 p.m. start against Hillsdale (Mich.)
